Give Love with our Valentine’s Day Jewellery Collection
Every 14th of February, people around the globe celebrate the day of romance called Valentine’s Day. Although it is not a public holiday, people commemorate it by gifting cards, candy, chocolates, presents, flowers, or something from a Valentine’s Day jewellery collection to their special someone. It is indeed the perfect moment to celebrate the most beautiful feeling in the world: love.
The Sweet History of Valentine’s Day
The day of romance is named after Christian martyrs and dates back to the 5th century. Valentine's Day started as a liturgical celebration of three Christian saints named Valentine or Valentinus, who are all martyrs. Several martyrdom stories were invented that highlight the story of various Valentines. However, some historicists also believe that the origins of Valentine’s Day began in the Roman holiday Lupercalia.
One famous legend tells the story of Valentine the priest who served the church on the brink of third century Rome. When Emperor Claudius II realised that single men were more effective soldiers than those with wives and families, he broke the law allowing young men to marry. Witnessing injustice before him, Valentinus defied Claudius. He continued performing marriages for young couples in secret. When this was discovered by the palace, Claudius passed an order to put Valentinus to death.
Valentine's Day was also an official feast day in the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church.
Although known as a religious day, Valentine’s Day was later associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer. That was the time the tradition of courtly love flourished and celebrated. In Australia, couple celebrate Valentine’s Day through a simple picnic in the park, a romantic meal at a restaurant, or a special date in a cruise. Lovers began to express their adoration for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectioneries, sending greeting cards, and giving jewellery pieces.
Valentine's Day jewellery collection often includes symbols used in modern jewellery making, such as the heart-shape outline, infinity emblems, a pair of birds, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Precious stones that display the colours red and pink are also part of any Valentine's Day jewellery collection.
