Get to Know your Choices for December Birthstone
People born on the 12th month of the year can choose among three December birthstone: Turquoise, Zircon, and Tanzanite. These gemstones have a unique blue colour which makes them a soothing, eye-catching piece of jewellery during winters. Take a closer look at each of them.
December Birthstone: Turquoise
The word turquoise comes from the Greek word ‘Turkois’, which literally means Turkish. The copper aluminium phosphate December birthstone was first brought from Turkey, hence, the name. Turquoise, although popular in its sky blue tone, is not confined to it. It can also be found in blue green and other green shades such as apple green to greenish, yellowish grey. The colour of turquoise is a symbolism of the birth cycle because the gem changes colour with ageing.
Aside from this symbolism, the December birthstone is also associated with good fortune, success, prosperity, and happiness. Turquoise is also used for its believed metaphysical properties such as protection from diseases, and for strength and open communication. It is also believed to cure health problems in the lungs, throat, and teeth, and relieve asthma and depression. Because of its colour, this December birthstone is also seen to bring serenity, and enhance creativity.
December Birthstone: Zircon
Zircon is often found in Australia, Cambodia, France, Brazil, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. This December birthstone is adored for its bright sky blue colour similar to turquoise. However, it is also available in earth tones of dark red, green, brown, yellow, and orange.
Today, vivid blue and Caribbean Sea colours are becoming favourites for zircon. However, there are colourless zircons which are often used in rings to imitate diamonds. This December birthstone has a hardness of 7.5. This gem is somewhat softer; hence, scratches and sharp blows might damage it. Zircon is believed to bring prosperity, and promote honour and wisdom.
December Birthstone: Tanzanite
Tanzanite is a rare gemstone which can only be found in Mount Kilimanjaro. This December birthstone is famous for its signature velvety blue colour with an overtone of purple. Tanzanite is often heat-treated to bring out its more vivid colour, and remove its brown yellowish colour.
They say tanzanite is both calming and soothing. A tiny piece of this gemstone is believed to help in overcoming communication difficulties. Hence, tanzanite is a good December gemstone when you want to propose a marriage to your December-born significant other. If you cannot say it with words, at least say it with the ring.
December Birthstone: Topaz
Another popular December birthstone is Topaz. Its name is derived from the small island in the Red Sea called Topazos. It is famous for its exotic blue tint which is often called pingos d’agua. It means drops of water. Topaz is believed to be a cure for asthma and insomnia. It is also known to calm anger, strengthen intellect, brighten wit, and bring joy and content to its wearer.
